Dewey Lake is a 225-acre all-sports lake among the Sister Lakes, which include Round Lake, Big Crooked, Little Crooked, and Cable lakes, about 10 miles northwest of Dowagiac and 15 to 20 miles east of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. It is about 45 minutes north of Notre Dame and two hours from Chicago, with easy access from Interstate 94. The lake, with an average depth of 10 to 12 feet and one point as deep as 70 feet, offers anglers mostly bluegill andlargemouth bass with some crappie, perch, and northern pike. A boat launch is on the southeastern end of the lake. Home prices range from $250,000 to $1 million, with most between $400,000 and $600,000. The became nationally famous in the 1960s amid reported sightings of a Dewey Lake Monster, sometimes called the Sister Lakes Sasquatch, that was never captured.
Within two miles, there are 10 restaurants and four bars that serve food, including BT’s Pub that has served the community for more than 20 years. Sister Lakes’ second microbrewery will open in 2017. Sister Lakes has one small hardware store and two grocery stores, one specializing in Mexican goods, as well as three marinas. Two larger hardware stores and two larger grocery stores are in Dowagiac. Chain big-box stores are in Benton Harbor. Dowagiac has a hospital and a walk-in clinic.
There are four golf courses within 15 miles of Dewey Lake, with two championship courses in St. Joseph. Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac and Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor have entertainment venues, and the towns both have community theaters. A snowmobile trail starts near the lake, and a biking trail runs between Sister Lakes and the airport in Dowagiac. Sister Lakes has a roller rink and a miniature golf course. The surrounding countryside is part of the Michigan fruit belt, with wineries and apple, peach, strawberry, and cherry farms with roadside stands and opportunities for you-pick excursions.
The 100-member Dewey Lake Property Owners’ Association protects the lake from weeds and issues three newsletters each year for the community. The association also hosts an annual Fourth of July boat parade of home owners on the lake.
