Donnell Lake is a 294-acre all-sports lake with a depth up to 68 feet and a shoreline of 15 to 20 miles, with a two-acre island on the eastern end. About one-third of the lake is less than 20 feet deep. Fishing is good for bluegill, pike, walleye, and perch. The lake is two miles southeast of Vandalia, about 35 minutes from Notre Dame and two hours from Chicago. A sewer system was installed 20 years ago, and water quality is high. Home prices range from $175,000 to $900,000 and up. About 60 percent of the homes are occupied seasonally.
Favorite bars and restaurant include Zeke’s Restaurant in Dowagiac, The Friendly Grille and Tavern near Jones, and The Rock at Big Fish Lake near Marcellus. Groceries and hardware stores in the area include Meijer’s, Harding’s, Home Depot, and Menard’s. Marinas at Diamond Lake, Eagle Lake, and Corey Lake serve Donnell Lake residents.
Dr. T.K. Lawless Park is just east of the lake, and four golf courses are within 20 minutes. Swiss Valley skiing is just 15 minutes northeast. Some 50 wineries operate within 50 miles, including St. Julian in Paw Paw about a half-hour away. Amish Country, including Nappanee and Shipshewana shopping and restaurants, are within an hour, along with museums, theaters, and other attractions in South Bend and Elkhart.
The Donnell Lake Conservation Club publishes an annual newsletter and sponsors a half-dozen events each year, including a corn and sausage roast, pancake breakfast, youth fishing tournament, Poker Run and Independence Day fireworks display.
