Portage Lake

Portage Lake Michigan Homes For Sale

All-sports Portage Lake, 510 acres with a maximum depth of 37 feet, has large areas of undeveloped shoreline including a conservancy on the north side and wetlands. A retirement community, Klines Resort (klinesresort.com), that dates to the 1930s, has about one-fifth of the lakefront. Homes for sale on Portage Lake are mostly old-style cottages, but some are being replaced by larger homes.

Portage Lake was formed by glaciers. The Portage River that flows through the lake from north to south is part of the St. Joseph County Water Trail that attracts kayakers and canoeists. The Michigan DNR maintains a boat launch on the lake. Fishing includes panfish, bass, pike, and crappie. Home prices near the lake can range from $300,000 to about $2.5 million.

Portage Lake is between Mendon and Vicksburg, which have shopping, restaurants, and bars, including Main Street Smokehouse in Mendon. The village of Vicksburg promotes street festivals and other attractions in the summer. Angels Crossing Golf Club is two-and-a-half miles away in Vicksburg, and Island Hills Golf Club is about five miles away in Centreville. Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area is eight to ten miles away. The lake is an easy drive to South Haven, South Bend, and Saugatuck.
An active homeowners’ association, Friends of Porter Lake (friendsofportagelake.org), a member of the Michigan Lakes and Streams Association, monitors and sustains water quality, hold an annual meeting, and host a July 4 boat parade. Portage Lake is two hours forty-five minutes from Chicago, one hour from Notre Dame.
