Baldwin Lake is a 266-acre, spring-fed, all-sports lake in Union, Michigan, just 25 minutes from Notre Dame and less than two hours from Chicago, with easy access from Interstate 80/90. The 60-foot-deep lake, with three miles of shoreline and more than 100 springs, offers excellent fishing for bass, bluegill, and northern pike, among others. Homes on the lake range from $200,000 to more than $2 million.
The community has its own lakeside favorite bar/restaurant, family-friendly Zimmy’s Tavern that serves lunch and dinner and hosts bands on most Thursdays and Sundays. George’s Bar & Grill near the lake serves breakfast and lunch. Mills Grocery stocks beverages, food, and boat supplies. Other eateries and groceries are minutes away in Bristol, Elkhart, and Mishawaka.
Entertainment and sports amenities are also close by. Elcona Country Club in Bristol is one of northern Indiana’s premier golf courses, and the Bristol Opera House hosts concerts, plays, and other events. Dr. T.K. Lawless Park, with mountain biking, walking, and jogging trails and a wintertime tubing hill, and Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboard Area are both 15 minutes away in Jones. A snowmobile trail two miles from Baldwin Lake is accessible by back roads. South Bend and Kalamazoo are a half-hour away, and New Buffalo and Michigan’s wine country are within 45 minutes.
The active Baldwin Lake Association (www.baldwinlakeassociation.com) monitors water quality and ensures mosquito control. It also provides community information and sponsors social events such as an annual Baldwin Lake Poker Run, Fourth of July Fireworks, and a Christmas party. Firefighting and public safety stations are nearby.
