The area was once the hunting grounds of Native Americans, and the lake is named for an early settler, John Corry. Both campgrounds are more than a century old, leaving less dense residential housing overall.

Corey Lake Marina offers boat service and a convenience store, and Happy Landing Café & Lounge and Dock Sports Bar offer food and drink. The Corey Lake Yacht Club promotes sailing, racing, and socializing, with races on Saturday and Sunday through the summer. Corey Lake Orchards, within walking distance, offers fresh produce, pick-your-own apples, strawberries, peaches, and cherries, and brandy made from its own grapes. A half-hour away in Dowagiac, the Wood Fire Grill is a favorite restaurant, often featuring entertainment from Chicago. The lake is 45 minutes from Portage and Kalamazoo with their restaurants and brewpubs and less than an hour to South Haven and the wine country around Paw Paw.

The active lake association (coreylakeassociation.com) hosts numerous social and educational events, including an Independence Day boat parade and fireworks, a poker run, a yard sale, a triathlon, and a workshop on shoreline landscaping.
